Product Overview

In late August of 2018, the Boxwood Moth arrived in Ontario and Toronto, Canada. Then as recently as April 2021 it was discovered that a nursery in Ontario shipped boxwood to the States and the pest has been identified in three facilities: Michigan, Connecticut, and South Carolina. The USDA is aggressively taking action to track down all affected plants and contain this pest.

Since 2007, the boxwood moth caterpillar has been devastating domestic, commercial and great historic boxwood gardens across Europe. Now that it is in the States it is important to discover any boxwood moth infestations early to allow it to be stopped and reduce the chance of it establishing itself in the United States and your landscape. There is no need to be worried as you can monitor the presence of the moth with TOPBUXUS ® Moth Trap and use biological pesticides that are currently on the market to control the caterpillar.

TOPBUXUS® BOXWOOD MOTH TRAP is an effective way to monitor the presence of the male boxwood moth. The male moths are attracted by the pheromone and cannot escape the trap once they enter it. Once you confirm its presence, you can take action with available biological pesticides that contain as the active ingredient bacillus thuringiensis subspecies kurstaki (BTK). You spray these products when there are caterpillars present. If the infestation of caterpillar is small you can also hand pick them off and put them in soapy water.  Another method is to blast them off the boxwood with water from the hose as they cannot climb back up the boxwood before starving.

The TOPBUXUS® Boxwood Moth Trap comes with 2 syringes with pheromone attractants that is sufficient for 1 season. The Boxwood Moth season starts mid-March through November.

Learn About the Boxwood Moth

We need to monitor and watch for the new boxwood pest, Boxwood Moth, arriving in United States. It’s a matter of when the Boxwood Moth will arrive given sightings of the pest in Ontario and Toronto Canada in late 2018.

The boxwood moth, Cydalima perspectalis, feeds on boxwood. It’s a native to China, Korea and other parts of Asia. The boxwood moth was introduced into Europe in 2007 and has rapidly spread and devastated domestic, commercial and great historic boxwood gardens across Europe. The adult female moth is capable of flying over six miles a year. However, the main way they have spread so quickly in Europe is through the movement of infested nursery boxwood plants.

Meet the Boxwood Moth!

There are two variants of boxwood moths. The ‘Common’ variant seen in the photo and the ‘Melanic’ variant, which are almost entirely brown with a small white dot on each forewing.

The female moth starts laying eggs 2-3 days after they start flying. The eggs are pale yellow and laid on the underside of boxwood leaves. Once the eggs hatch, the caterpillar larvae start feeding on leaves of boxwood and cause substantial, rapid defoliation that can result in the death of the plant in one to two years.  Boxwood moths have 3-4 generations a year, each lasting about 45 days. They are active from mid-March to November.

Meet the Boxwood Caterpillar

The caterpillars are yellow to lime green with dark stripes. They eat boxwood leaves and can quickly defoliate and even kill large boxwood hedges. They don’t stop when they run out of leaves; they start eating the bark, which opens the boxwood to pathogens. In addition to the feeding damage, the caterpillars create a mess of webbing within the boxwood plant creating an ugly appearance and protection from predators.

The caterpillars first appear in March when the weather warms up having wintered wrapped up in their webbing between the leaves.

There is enough included for 6 months of cover or for 1 full season.

3. Halfway through the season (about mid-July), you will want to add the contents of the second syringe over the two baskets and place the baskets into the trap. Then rehang the trap for the rest of the season.
